Steven S and Tom Cruise ...sounded like a very promising combination.. But how did they manage to come up with probably the most stupid, boring movie of the year that I have seen i dunno. Yup ! the movie sucked big time. And for those who saw it and wonder how the "All powerful" aliens suddenly start to die.. here is the answers..
The thing is evolution, the human have evolved and have grown accustomed to this environment over thousands of years.. Darwin principle.. And the aliens could not get used to it in a couple of days. which begs a question If the aliens did manage to reach Earth thru some brilliant scientific wizardry.. did they not know anything about our environment..
Go figure !!!

I read the book.
The movie was still not that good - SFX taking the place of any real character development (other than the "growth" of Cruise's self-centered jerk into an almost caring dad).
The terrorist subtext was okay - they did the same sort of thing in the far better 1950s version of the film (where we actually cared about the characters).
But one change in this movie that was not faithful to the book was the planting of the machines at some point in the past. If the aliens were here way back when, why did they not encounter germs then? If they planted them before life began, how did they know to plant them here? And as even our scientists would do, why didn't they test for possible contaminents on this planet before coming down and breathing/eating here?
Too many holes left in the plot.
The 50s version didn't have the special effects, but at least it had a more organic story and likable characters.
Personally, I was rooting for the aliens to suck Cruise dry!
